Provides the classes for implementing networking applications.

The java.net package can be roughly divided in two sections:

1. A Java Low Level API, which deals with the following Java abstractions:

Java Addresses, which are Java networking identifiers, like Java IP addresses.

Java Sockets, which are basic bidirectional data communication mechanisms.

Java Interfaces, which describe Java network interfaces.

2. A Java High Level API, which deals with the following Java abstractions:

Java URIs, which represent Java Universal Resource Identifiers.

Java URLs, which represent Java Universal Resource Locators.

Java Connections, which represents connections to the network resource pointed to by URLs.

Java Network Addresses

Java Network Addresses: Addresses are used throughout the java.net APIs as either Java host identifiers, or Java socket endpoint identifiers.

The Java InetAddress class is the Java abstraction representing an Java IP (Internet Protocol) address. It has two Java subclasses:

But, in most cases, there is no need to deal directly with the Java subclasses, as the Java InetAddress abstraction should cover most of the needed functionality.
